The Human Story ("the tool") is provided by Notla Ventures Limited ("we", "us", "our"), trading as Notla Learn, a company registered in England and Wales with company number 16673455. Our registered office is at 144 Walter Road, Swansea, SA1 5RW. You can contact us at contact@notlalearn.com.
By using the tool you agree to these terms, together with our privacy policy and cookies policy. If you do not agree with them, please do not use the tool. The tool is provided free of charge.
The Human Story is a free educational timeline of 159 turning points in human history, presented as a chronometer you wind forward and back. It is a starting point for curiosity, not a comprehensive account. Any selection of turning points involves editorial judgement, and reasonable historians disagree about what belongs on such a list and about how each event should be framed.
We take historical and scientific accuracy seriously and draw on published scholarship and dating evidence. Dates in deep prehistory are estimates that shift as new evidence appears, and many are given as approximations for that reason. The tool is suitable for education and general interest. It is not a citable academic source, and it should not be relied on for assessed work, publication or research without checking against primary scholarship.
You may use the tool freely for personal, educational and classroom purposes, including on screens and devices in museums, galleries, libraries and schools. Please do not misuse it, attempt to disrupt it, or present it as your own work. Venues and organisations interested in licensing, translated or commissioned versions are welcome to get in touch.
The design, text, graphics and code of this tool are the property of Notla Ventures Limited unless otherwise stated. Historical facts and dates are factual information and belong to no one.
The tool is provided free of charge, as is and as available. We do not guarantee it will be uninterrupted or error free. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded under the law of England and Wales, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Subject to that, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from use of a free educational tool. Your statutory rights as a consumer are unaffected.
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you are a consumer living in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you keep the benefit of any mandatory consumer protections of, and may bring proceedings in, your home nation.
We may update these terms from time to time. The date above shows the current version. Continued use of the tool after a change means you accept the updated terms.
This tool does not collect your personal data. Everything it does happens in your browser. There are no accounts, no forms, no tracking scripts, no advertising and no third-party requests of any kind, including fonts. Nothing you do here is sent to us or to anyone else.
The data controller for this site is Notla Ventures Limited, trading as Notla Learn, registered in England and Wales (company number 16673455), 144 Walter Road, Swansea, SA1 5RW. Contact: contact@notlalearn.com.
The site is hosted by Netlify. Like almost all web hosts, Netlify's infrastructure records standard server logs when a page is requested, which can include your IP address, browser type, the time of the request and the page requested. These logs exist to deliver the site and keep it secure. Our lawful basis for this limited processing under UK GDPR is legitimate interests, namely operating and protecting the service. Logs are held briefly by Netlify as our hosting provider and are not used by us to identify visitors. Netlify may process this data on infrastructure outside the UK, subject to the safeguards required by UK data protection law.
The tool is suitable for use by children and is often used in classrooms and family settings. It collects no personal data from anyone, of any age, and asks for none.
You have rights under UK data protection law, including the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and portability. Because we hold no information that identifies you, we will not usually be able to match a request to a person. Under Article 11 of the UK GDPR we may ask you to provide additional information to enable identification, and where we cannot identify you we may be unable to act on a request. We will always explain our position.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal data, please contact us first so we can try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK supervisory authority, at ico.org.uk.
If this policy changes, the date above will be updated. If a future version of the tool needed to collect anything, we would say so here before it did.
We set no cookies at all. It also uses no comparable technologies: no localStorage, no sessionStorage, no fingerprinting and no analytics scripts. Neither we nor our hosting provider set cookies through this site.
There is nothing to consent to and nothing to decline, which is why you have not seen a cookie banner. The tool remembers nothing about you between visits, by design. Close the page and it starts fresh.
The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations require consent before storing information on your device, other than for strictly necessary purposes. We store nothing, so no consent is needed. We publish this policy so you can check that claim rather than take it on trust.
If a future version of this tool needed a cookie or similar technology for some feature, we would update this policy first and, where the law requires it, ask for your consent before setting anything.
